51 years ago, John F. Kennedy
gave his inaugural address which included
these well-known words,
"...my fellow Americans:
ask not what your country can do for you...
ask what you can do for your country."

I think the same kind of wisdom can
and should be applied to God's church today.

Ask not what your church can do for you;
ask what you can do for your church.

Imagine what your church
{and the neighborhood it serves}
could be like, 51 years from today,
if every God-fearing member
committed to asking themselves,
not what their church could do for them,
but what they could do for their church...
and then did it.

Antique Graphics - {1893 Gray's Anatomy Illustrations}

Normally I show you antique graphics
on Wednesday, but I've got so many old papers
with images stacking upon my desk.
I'm attempting to get them all scanned, edited
and saved on my computer
so I can find my desk again.

Today's images come from a 1893
Gray's Anatomy book that
is filled with fascinating medical illustrations.

These are wonderful to frame
as unusual wall art, but
would be great for altered art
projects and Halloween decor.

Angie -vs- The Living Room Wall

In the ongoing battle against an ugly living room wall,
I think the view is finally improving!

Exhibit A
This shelf/wall/thing was the divider
between the kitchen and the living room.
Kitchen cabinets are on the other side.
It was very glossy, stained, old pine wood
and just screamed 60's.

In an attempt to bring it into the next

century, I painted it white.

While that made it more bearable,

and the shelves were handy

for displaying collectibles,

it just wasn't cutting it.

Exhibit B

When we decided to start remodeling the kitchen,
the decision was made to just tear this thing
out to get the look we wanted in the kitchen,
which meant we'd also be able to
make the living room side
look better at the same time.

Remember this window?

If you don't remember, I got 18 of them
at an auction that was selling off the salvage
from a historic courthouse in Kahoka, MO
that was demolished.
I paid less than $20 for all of them.

I sold 10 of them, but I knew I wanted to do
something wonderful with the rest.

These windows are big - 53 x 53.
I'd really love to have one installed to replace
my living room window (which is small),
but that would be a J.O.B. and
the glass is old, so they wouldn't be
energy efficient at all.
Still - I love the history they come with
and the aged look they have.
The chippy old hardware is wonderful!

begging my husband...more begging...a little foot stomping...

Exhibit C

It still isn't finished, but I'm loving it.
I'm finishing up painting it right now
and deciding what to hang on the wall area.

The window allows a lot of light
to pass between the two rooms
and makes both rooms seem more open.
The glass cabinet doors above the wall
area were salvaged from the original
kitchen cabinets. My husband installed
on them on the kitchen and the living
room side so I could use that space
to display favorite things.
He'll be adding a light inside it also.

The wall part is actually the back of a "nook"
that my husband built for the refrigerator on
the other side. Beneath the window
on the other side is a counter with bar stools
and cabinets underneath for storage.
My husband added an electric outlet
next to the counter so it's a great place
to work at the computer.

The kitchen is a major project,
so it will still be a few months before
it's finished, but I love what my
husband has accomplished so far.
He's such a good sport really.
He pointed out to me once
that I have the easy part.
I raise my finger at auction,
he does the rest.

He made a 45 minute drive
to pick up these 18 windows for me,
built a shipping crate for the 10 I sold,
moved the remainder from our
old house to the new one,
put them in the garage,
got one back out of the garage
so I could decide how I liked it,
and then installed it.

Yeah...he's a good guy.

The kitchen side involves another
reuse of some "old junk" that I have.
He isn't jumping up and down about,
but I think he'll like it when it's done.
It just takes him a while to warm up
to the ideas I have
{and the work that always involves}.

Just 5 Minutes to Spare

If you've got 5 minutes
to spare, then I have a
sweet little project for you.

It'll probably take you longer
to read this post than to
create the project!

You could use any kind of paper,
but I love this line
of scrapbook paper by Tim Holtz,
in his idea-ology collection called,
"Lost & Found".
It was priced $14.99 for a 36 double-sided
pages, but of course I used my
40% off coupon to buy it.

He's captured the beauty
of real antique treasures and
the colors are so vivid.

I bought it because
I had a specific project in mind
that I needed one of the pages for
{which you'll learn about soon!},
but even though it was the wee hours of the morning,
I just had to tinker around with
some of this paper a little bit.

I had just drank the contents
of a cute little glass bottle
{sshhhh...it was a small bottle}
and was about to throw it away,
but as I thumbed through
the papers, I realized some of the
2 x 2 "snippets" images would be the perfect
size for the bottle I had just emptied.

This page shows antique photos
taken in a photo booth - really charming!

Okay - here's the 5 minute instructions:
1) cut out your image -
{you could use real vintage papers, but
I recommend selecting paper that doesn't
have an image on the back side or it may show through}
2) singe the edges just slightly for a tattered look
3) paint some Elmer's on the back of the paper and
stick it on the bottle
4) use a damp rag to wipe off any glue on the bottle
5) Fill with water & your favorite flowers

Done

It's a great excuse to go
buy some fresh-cut flowers too!

Antique Graphics Wednesday - Antique Postcards {The Back Sides}

I never tire of looking at antique postcards

and I hope you don't either,

because today I'm bringing you some more.

Only this time - the back sides!

They are just as terrific

as the front sides, and there are so

many crafty ways to use them.

Just right-click, save & print!

Love the way this one has aged
to a yummy caramel hue.
It's my favorite.

This one has several different languages on it.

Here's a French one.

This postcard has lots of aging,
but also shows the embossed areas
from the front side.

Here's just the graphic from the top.
Love the scrolly sides and the hand holding the torch.

Here it is again, with the words removed,

so you can add your own words.

Love the typography on this one.

Here's another one with heavy aging.

Here's the same card, but I altered the color tone.

Here's the last one for today.
This one is from 1909 and I believe is German.

I'm planning a project with these images.
I hope you can do something wonderful

Today I'd like to ask a question.
It's a question I think we should
ask ourselves often.

Have you thanked your pastor lately?
Have you thanked his wife?

Now, I'm not talking about
thanking them in October during
Pastor Appreciation Month.
Doing it then is fine, but I'll be honest...
I'm not crazy about it.

It feels kind of obligatory to
thank them then and I
wonder if they truly feel
appreciated during that month,
or feel like everyone gives the a card
simply because it's expected.

I'm talking about thanking them
when they don't "expect" it...
simply because they faithfully serve us.

Because they visit our sick.

Because they can't decide they'll sleep in one week -
and are at church, whether we are or not.

Because they do more work than
we are aware of.

Because they attend meetings,
they'd rather skip.

Because they reach out to the neighborhood.

Because they put up with many people,
who aren't easy to put up with.

Because they are held to a higher
standard than most of us
would want to be held to.

I know I don't thank my pastor or his wife
nearly as often as I should.

We are often quick to critique our servants,
but much less quick to compliment them,
or speak positively about them to others.
Forgive me Lord, but I know I've been guilty.

Imagine with me
there is a balance scale sitting
at the front of your church.

Imagine that every
time a kind word was spoken
about or to the pastor, a coin was added.

On the other side of the balance,
a coin was added for every
negative comment that was made about them,
{because those comments
are rarely made to their face}.

Would the balance be tipped
in the favor of thankfulness for service?

See... It's a Mantel!

My husband doubted my sanity
when I brought a mammoth piano home,
because I *needed* a mantle in my home -
and this piano was going to serve that purpose.

Some of you thought I meant
I was going to turn the piano
into something like a mock fireplace mantle.

No....the piano IS my mantle.
I wouldn't dream of taking
this old beauty apart!
{and wouldn't have the patience if I did want to do it}.

Now, I ask you,
Is THIS a mantle or what?

Yep, I'm steppin' to the music now!

Who needs a fireplace mantel?
I have ebony, ivory and that
stunning brass soundboard inside it!

The wood piece which normally covers
the soundboard is gorgeous wood,
so I will probably turn it into a shelf.

I found this amazing old mirror at a thrift shop
this week and love the "ghost marks" it has.
It's exactly what I needed as the
centerpiece for the piano.

My grandma would consider this mantel
much too cluttered with stuff.
She was a believer in the bare minimum to
make dusting easy, but I'm just not a
bare minimum type of person.
Truthfully, I'm also not a big believer in dusting,
so hopefully all my "clutter"
will distract the eye from the dust.

Speaking of my grandmother, Anna,
there were 2 things I requested
when she passed away -
her crochet hooks and one
of her head coverings that she wore to church.
My grandma had a crown of the
most beautiful creamy white hair. She
kept it rolled neatly at the nape of her neck
and her black, lace head covering
looked so lovely on her.
You can see the head covering resting
on the corner of the hymnal.

My grandfather, Alfred, died
when I was much younger,
but I still have dear memories of
sitting on the rocking chair with him.
The 2 smaller hymnals you see belonged to
him and are the only things
I have that were his.

Truthfully, I think I swiped them
from my mom a long time ago,
but she knows I did it!
Well, I hope she knows or
I'm in trouble now.

My whole little clock family
is all together on this mantel,
with the exception of the
one I keep in my office and
use most often as a prop for my Etsy photos.

This is a recent find and is
the only working clock in my collection.

So there you have it...my mantel.
It's not the mantle I envisioned having,
but it has all the character I hoped for.

Using the Remnants - Antique Grainsack Pillow

I love the motto,
"Use it up,
wear it out,
make it do,
or do without."

So in an effort to "use up" some of my fabric stash,
I mailed some antique fabric & lace
remnants to my mom,
{who loves me enough
to keep sewing things for me}
and asked her create this
grain sack pillow for me.

The fabric is leftover
from the seat cover I made
for this old chair.

I love the aged appearance & the lettering
on this grain sack.

Things don't stay clean long in our house,
with 2 indoor dogs and a cat
that comes and goes as she pleases.
I need things to be washable,
so Mom did an envelope closure
back on it, which is easily removable.

The Other Side of the Story

Months ago, I showed you the
remodel of our entryway,
from a room with dated, dark paneling,
to a room with a whole new, but vintage look.

But, only half of the room was
remodeled because
the wall on the other half
of the room needed to remain
open to the studs so my husband
could work on the plumbing going
on in the bathroom behind the wall.

Well, that "ladies room"
finally got finished, (seen HERE),
so it was time to finish up the entryway.

Again, more dictionary pages
were added to the other walls,
but I wanted one "focal" wall,
so I decided to create a huge chalkboard
on the wall where our coats hang.

My husband added thin wood
over the wallboard,
then I primed and painted it
with chalkboard paint.

I love the final result!

I added some old wood
across the chalkboard and used
some of my date nails as coat hooks.
{side note - I've sold loads of these
date nails on Etsy & only have
1 more lot of 5 available HERE}.

Love this old, brass skeleton key!

As trim across the top of the chalkboard,
I added an old wooden yardstick.

If I find enough of these,
I may "frame" up the sides of
the chalkboard with them also.

My 12 year-old son is a doodler,
so he's had fun with this new wall.

A couple of trunks stacked along one wall
make a nice stand for my antique typewriter.

Love, love, love these old keys.

And an old ledger from 1914 sits next to the typewriter.

My antique receipt holder holds bits of ephemera

and some watch parts turned into magnets.

The page below the receipt file was sent

to me by Linda @ Itsy Bits and Pieces.

It's a map of the mine fields in several states,

including Illinois. Love it!

A few small antique crates make

great shelves to hold my little camera collection,

along with a few favorite trinkets & treasures.

The top of one of the crates makes

a great place for a stack of

antique books, a pair of spectacles

& and old chalkboard.

The top of the other shelf
holds an old oil can, a photo,
and some lovely old bottles.
That's the edge of my
button garland hanging in the corner.

I love old baby shoes.
Makes me wonder how old the child
who wore them is (or would be) today.

Another sweet pair of baby shoes,
along with an antique spelling book.

The other wall is mostly taken up by

a window, but beneath the window

sits a gossip bench that I dressed up

with some pages from my 1800's Peterson's Magazines.

It makes a nice spot to drop my purse

when I walk in the door.

These sweet found bird's nests
rest on the bench.

And this book stack with a remnant
from a hymnal rest there also.

Between the window and the chalkboard

is a narrow spot, just wide enough

to hang a wonderfully aged clip board,

and the "tintype" of myself taken in 1800's clothing.

Attached to the clip board is this fabulous

title page from an antique book.

We still have to install new flooring
over the plain concrete floors,
but I just smile walking into my
entryway now.

The only real expenses in this room
were the small can of chalkboard paint,
a jug of Elmer's glue and $3 for the dictionary
that covered all the walls.
This entire room remodel cost
less than $40!

This will be ever-growing as new graphics

All of the images I'm posting
today come from my stock
of 1800's Peterson's Magazines.

Isn't this gown stunning?

There was a lot of bleed-through from the image

on the other side of the page, so I've eliminated

all of the background.

Here's an advertisement for scissors
from the magazines.

Each magazine had a 2-page spread

featuring the Paris fashions at the time,

so the gals in America could get their French fix.

Certainly not much different than

the gals of today, was it?

I left this page in its original form,

because I think the aging on the page

shows the authentic look of a page that is 144 years old,

and would look wonderful when printed for

a craft or altered art project.

It honestly felt a little bizarre

to hold a page in my hands that is THAT old!

It makes me wonder just how many

other women have gazed at these

pages in all those years.

I hope you've enjoyed this

little journey back through time

through these images.

My Valentine's Punishment

In honor of Valentine's Day,
I have a little story for you.
Get a Kleenex...it's a sad, little story.

Last year it seemed tragic,
but this year I can reflect on it
without weeping.

You see, it isn't all that often that
I get flowers from my husband.

Being the ~~tightwad~~, thrifty person that I am,
years ago, I made the mistake
of commenting about how expensive
the bouquet of flowers were that he
bought me and he decided to never
make that mistake again.
I haven't received a bouquet of flowers since.

But last year, he bought me ONE
single stem red rose.
Yes, a dozen would have been lovely,
but believe, me I shut my mouth
and was overjoyed that he bought me a flower.

We had both been at our son's basketball
game until late that evening, and
drove separately to the game,
so before we left the parking lot to go home,
he came over to my van and
handed me one beautiful red rose.
Overjoyed, I gently placed it on the
dashboard of my van, planning
to put it in a vase, and place it in my
kitchen window when I got home.

What happened next is still
a bit of a blur in my mind.
All I remember is braking at a
stop light, and in slow motion,
watching that lovely red rose
fall to the floor of the van.

Not only did it fall to the floor,
it ricocheted off of the
cup holder and the edge of my
seat before it hit the floor.

I screamed to my daughter to retrieve
my lovely red rose,
so I wouldn't crash the van trying to get it.

She leaned over,
picked it up by the stem...
{here's the tragic part}, and
e.v.e.r.y
s.i.n.g.l.e
b.l.e.s.s.e.d
petal fell off of that stem.
Not one single petal remained.

I felt I was being punished
for that ONE stupid comment
I made about the price of roses
so many years before.

Knowing I would
never,
ever,
ever,
in this lifetime,
get another flower from
my husband again if he
learned the fate of the flower he bought me,
I did what any flower-starved wife would
do at 9:30 at night on Valentine's Day.

I went to a gas station
and paid FIVE (yes FIVE) dollars
to buy myself another red rose
that I could take home
and lovingly put in a vase
to display at my window...
so my husband would never know of my folly.

Every tightwad bone in my body
was in agony, but I handed that
5 bucks to the cashier and was
just relieved they still had
any red roses left at 9:30 at
night on Valentine's Day.

My daughter never ratted on me.
I think perhaps I may have
threatened her with bodily harm...just a tad,
if she told her father.

So, where did all these lovely flowers come
from that you've been seeing in this post?
My beloved husband?

Okay, I'm gonna be honest.
THESE flowers did not come
from my husband.

They came from my good friend.
Not only did my friend give them
to me, but she gave them to
me as a gift on New Year's Eve
when she came to my house to celebrate.

Knowing I probably would not
get a bouquet of flowers for
Valentine's Day, I figured I
better photograph the heck out
of these flowers so I'd have
something beautiful to put in today's post.

Even after the flowers died,
I photographed the petals,
as a memorial to all those petals that
ended up on the floor of my van last year.

If you think this story is sad
and pathetic...it gets worse.

I actually already received my
Valentine's Day gift last week from my husband.
He bought me a new electric blanket,
because my old one gave out
and I need the temperature of my side of the
bed to be at least 85 degrees
or I'll put my cold toes on his legs to get warm.

{here's where more tragedy occurs}

About 3 days after giving it to me,
I laid down for an afternoon nap
and allowed our little min pin dog
to snuggle up under the blanket with me.

The next night when I went to bed,
the electric blanket wouldn't turn on.
I had no idea why and didn't want
to wake my husband, so
I suffered in the cold that night.

The next day,
my daughter was making my bed
{she earns a whoppin' quarter for that}
and she discovered that
one of the electric cords was sticking out of my blanket.

It had been chewed on and ruined.
Another Valentine's gift...destroyed.

I think I've been punished enough
for my stupid comment so many
years ago, don't you?

I hope you all have a
Happy Valentine's Day,
and you are smart enough
to not comment on the insane
price of fresh-cut flowers!

And honey,
if you are reading this,
I hope enough time has passed,
that you'll find this story amusing,
even though I never told you.
Please don't withhold future flowers
from me, thinking I will mistreat
them or say something stupid about them.

I promise the only thing I'll say is,
"They are beautiful, honey - I love them...and you."

{Vintage} Metal Stencils - My Restoration Hardware Knock-Off

Last month when I did a post
called, "Think Big", I showed
you a terrific industrial-looking
display of metal stencils
from Restoration Hardware that I love.

At $16 per letter,
I didn't love the price.
Getting the whole alphabet would
have cost $416 + tax and shipping!
I don't think so.
{did anyone else notice that the
the "K" appears to be upside down?}

I spotted a set of paper stencils
with a similar look at Staples for $3.99 -
That's more my price range.
These are Gothic font in a 2" height.
3" height were also available for $4.99.

They are almost a card stock thickness.
You get the whole alphabet, plus a few
extra often-used letters, as well as
the numbers 0 - 9.

Aside from displaying them all together,

there are tons of fun things to do with them.

Number Baskets & Bins

Add them to a Vignette

Make a Banner

Use them as embellishment on

old books with or without covers.

Play with them!

They were SO easy to make.

I had a can of spray paint in "aluminum" color,
which has a great metal look to it.

It took less than a 1 minute to
paint the whole sheet of stencils.

Left like this, they are a little too shiny,
so I rubbed on some Valspar antique glaze.

Now they resemble aged metal.

The glaze gets into the texture of the paper
and gives them "patina".

The longest part of this project
was separating the squares and punching
the insides of the letters out.

Chalk It Up

In its younger days,
this was a regular silver cookie sheet,
but it had browned as much as
the cookies that had baked on it
and I loved the way it aged.

I planned to use it as a magnet board in my kitchen,
but alas, it wasn't magnetic.
I knew I could still bake up something with it -
just not cookies.

It just needed that chalkboard ingredient!

When my youngest son saw it,
he said, "You haven't baked cookies in forever."
Well, forever is an exaggeration,
but not since Christmas and
I can't remember when before that,
so this will be a good reminder for me.

I love the chalky residue left by "priming"
it with the chalk - it's almost like flour on the pan.

Since I already had the paint out
and didn't want to clean the brush
after using it just that little bit,
I looked around for what else,
needed a little blackboard love.

I bought a stack of small, old dry erase boards
last week and planned to turn
them into framed chalkboards,
but spotted my stash of old metal clothing hangers.
I'd rather have something hanging
on the wall than setting somewhere
so this was a better choice.

He Had it Coming

Lest any of you are feeling
sorry for my husband for
having to go pick up
my new{old}
mantle {piano}
that weighs somewhere
around the size of a small vehicle,
let me just rest your mind
that he had it coming to him.

Do you all remember how
I wallpapered our living room
in pages from an 1890 Bible?

That's the same room
I want my {mantle} piano to go in.

Aged,
Worn,
Loved & Vintage...
That's the look I was hoping for in this room.

I think he missed that memo,
or we have a huge communication issue.

THAT man brought home this
{If I cussed, you could insert a bad word here}
monstrosity...

I thought our old tv was too big
and wanted to "frame" it
to try to hide it a little.

There's no hiding this beast.
The darn thing is over 46 inches wide.

To make matters worse,
he mounted it on a swivel "arm"
so that it can extend away from the
wall and be angled in different directions,
which makes it sit away from the wall half a foot.

My kids all think he's some
kind of saint.

You know what I think?
He deserved THIS...

I kind of hope it weighs
more like a SUV.
He deserves it.
;0)

What do you see when you
you look at this picture?

Look very carefully before answering.
Concentrate.
Focus.
Be open-minded.

Okay, now that you've had time to

dwell on it, I think you'll

agree with me that what you

see is NOT a piano.

It is not a huge,

old,

doesn't-work,

never-will-work

piano.

It's a mantle.

Like this one.

You see that,

Right?

If the truth be told,
it isn't even my fault.
It's YOURS.

Well, if you own a mantle,
and you constantly torture me
with images of it...
then this is all your fault.

I was minding my own business,
making a quick run through
the thrift store, when I saw it.

My delusional, mantle-crazed mind

went off the deep end.

So instead of seeing a piano,

I thought I saw a mantle.

And I bought it....

All several hundred pounds of it.

In my defense,

when I took off the front piece

and saw this...

There was no walking away from it.

Nope, couldn't do it.

How could you not fall

in love with a "mantle"

that comes with this kind of bling?

Surely, you mantle-decorating divas

can sympathize with me.

You understand, right?

My husband thinks I'm nuts,
and I really need some backup on this matter.

If you can't visualize this
becoming the most beautiful
"mantle" in my living room,
then PLEASE don't comment.
That's all it will take for him
to never let me live this down.

I'll admit,
It's a bit of a stretch,
but it's too late.
The deed is done.

I'll warn you,
you might want to cover
your ears when my husband
tries to get it out of the thrift store,
and into my home.

Let's just say,
he's not overjoyed with this purchase.
But he conceded that I could buy it.

Actually, I think his exact words were,
"You're going to buy it anyway,
so why did you call to ask me -
just so you could set up delivery?"

I'm so glad he understands me.

In his defense,
I have a history of putting a piano
in a burn pile and sending
it up in flames.
But that's a story for another day.

buttons, on their original card,
