One of the least decorative, but necessary items in a kitchen
has got to be the trash can. I've always hated to see the trash can
at all in the kitchen, but never had a place to hide it. My family seems
to fill it up pretty quickly, so putting a smaller one under the sink
where it could be hidden behind a cabinet door wasn't an option.
Since we had to completely gut our kitchen down to the studs in
the walls to remodel it, I was determined to create a way to hide
the trash can, yet still have it very accessible, but like every
other aspect of our kitchen remodel, I didn't have any plan of how I would do it.
When I came across this large wooden bin in an
antique store one day, I knew I'd found my solution.
My husband created the framework to hold it under a counter and
came up with the great idea of making a little "pocket"
inside the back to hold the rolls of trash bags.
Our regular plastic trash can fits inside the bin.

Our trash is well-hidden now and I love the chippy wood
I'll be more than happy to talk trash with you now,
so have you found a creative way to hide your trash
Blessings,
Angie

Looks great. Love the chippy factor! Was it maybe a potato bin? I've seen those like this before. Love how you hide the trash!

Best trash bin I have ever seen!
ReplyDeleteIck! an eye sore STILL! I have my eye on a few things. But still waiting for that perfect something.
ReplyDeleteI thought I almost had it today on the way back from the P.O. in town...but it was so covered up with bags of trash...100+ degrees outside and I had the grandaughter in the back seat. So... I didn't stop. It was a big wicker woven type basket...would be perfect!
I love your bin. It is magnificent! Pat
I should have known you wouldn't settle for the covered IKEA metal trash can. There you go again repruposing a great old chippy bin to add character to your kitchen. Looks wonderful against the newly painted wood!!
ReplyDeleteGenius! I just love this Angie!

ReplyDeleteIt pays to be patient like you, and wait for the perfect solution. What a great idea, and I love the place for the trash bags, too! Very clever!
ReplyDeleteLove this! I need to get rid of the plastic one in the middle of my kitchen with the top that keeps falling off... I love this idea!

Love it...perfectly chippy! Glad you were able to work it into your new kitchen! I actually have one similar in my shed waiting for a "purpose". Wish I was re-doing my kitchen...someday :) Laurel
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely idea! Great way to hide your trash can!
ReplyDeleteFinding your post was ironic to me, because I was just talking about replacing our ugly trash can with one the dog can't access. Not sure yet where I'll put it, but I may build one similar. Thanks for the inspiration. I just became a follower of your blog - love it!!

What a great re-purpose. I think it might have been a flour bin... it looks a lot like the one that was in our farmhouse where I grew up. The house was built around 1925, when everything was made from scratch. It might have been lined with metal, probably to help keep bugs out of the flour, but it opened just like that, and held a 50 lb bag of flour. I always thought that was one of the neatest things in the kitchen, along with the hidden behind a door ironing board. (Mom took out the ironing board and took off the top door and put in little shelves.)
ReplyDeleteActually that might have been a grain or flour bin. My Grandmother had a Hoosier cabinet and the flour bin looked just like that, including the handle.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations, Angie. That is indeed the perfect solution to accessible but not unsightly trash disposal.
ReplyDeleteOn my Aunt and Uncle's farm they had such a bin in the hen house to keep the feed for the chickens in. Oh I wish I could use this idea in my kitchen! I love it. I have since seen hour whole kitchen reveal it contains so many ideas! Thank you for sharing everything with us through out your blog. :) It is amazing!! Sarah
