Today I'd like to ask a question.
It's a question I think we should
ask ourselves often.
Have you thanked your pastor lately?
Have you thanked his wife?
Now, I'm not talking about
thanking them in October during
Pastor Appreciation Month.
Doing it then is fine, but I'll be honest...
I'm not crazy about it.
It feels kind of obligatory to
thank them then and I
wonder if they truly feel
appreciated during that month,
or feel like everyone gives the a card
simply because it's expected.
{source}
I'm talking about thanking them
when they don't "expect" it...
simply because they faithfully serve us.
Because they visit our sick.
Because they can't decide they'll sleep in one week -
and are at church, whether we are or not.
Because they do more work than
we are aware of.
Because they attend meetings,
they'd rather skip.
Because they reach out to the neighborhood.
Because they put up with many people,
who aren't easy to put up with.
Because they are held to a higher
standard than most of us
would want to be held to.
I know I don't thank my pastor or his wife
nearly as often as I should.

{source}
We are often quick to critique our servants,
but much less quick to compliment them,
or speak positively about them to others.
Forgive me Lord, but I know I've been guilty.
{source}
Imagine with me
there is a balance scale sitting
at the front of your church.

{source}
Imagine that every
time a kind word was spoken
about or to the pastor, a coin was added.
On the other side of the balance,
a coin was added for every
negative comment that was made about them,
{because those comments
are rarely made to their face}.
Would the balance be tipped
in the favor of thankfulness for service?

2 simple words...
can mean so much.

1 Thessalonians 5:12-13
12 And we urge you, brethren,
to recognize those who labor among you,
and are over you in the Lord and admonish you,
13 and to esteem them very highly in love
for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves.
Be a blessing today!

In fact I have many times. We have the absolutely BEST Pastor and his sermons are so inspiring. He just retired as a professor and had been doing double duty so to speak. He is a fabulous speaker and can really get your attention. His wife, well she is my good friend that we do projects together, work at the church together and just chat when we want. We will be summer garage sale buddies this coming season. Yes, I thank them and they are humbled when I do.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful and poignant post, Angie! Unfortunately, thankfulness seems to be lacking all around us these days I'm afraid.
ReplyDeleteBut we DO need to be thankful and certainly thank those who serve us...such as our pastors. My poor pastor had to cut his vacation short just this past week to come back and perform TWO unexpected funerals.
Thank you for taking the time to remind us to be thankful! ;)
Hugs,
Liz @ The Brambleberry Cottage
