The Other Side of the Story

Months ago, I showed you the
remodel of our entryway,
from a room with dated, dark paneling,
to a room with a whole new, but vintage look.

But, only half of the room was
remodeled because
the wall on the other half
of the room needed to remain
open to the studs so my husband
could work on the plumbing going
on in the bathroom behind the wall.

Well, that "ladies room"
finally got finished, (seen HERE),
so it was time to finish up the entryway.

Again, more dictionary pages
were added to the other walls,
but I wanted one "focal" wall,
so I decided to create a huge chalkboard
on the wall where our coats hang.

My husband added thin wood
over the wallboard,
then I primed and painted it
with chalkboard paint.

 I love the final result!

I added some old wood
across the chalkboard and used
some of my date nails as coat hooks.
{side note - I've sold loads of these
date nails on Etsy & only have

 Love this old, brass skeleton key!

As trim across the top of the chalkboard,
I added an old wooden yardstick.

If I find enough of these, I may "frame" up the sides of
the chalkboard with them also.

My 12 year-old son is a doodler,
so he's had fun with this new wall.

A couple of trunks stacked along one wall
make a nice stand for my antique typewriter.

 Love, love, love these old keys.

 And an old ledger from 1914 sits next to the typewriter.

My antique receipt holder holds bits of ephemera 

and some watch parts turned into magnets.

It's a map of the mine fields in several states,

including Illinois.  Love it!

A few small antique crates make

great shelves to hold my little camera collection,

along with a few favorite trinkets & treasures.

The top of one of the crates makes

a great place for a stack of

antique books, a pair of spectacles

& and old chalkboard. 

The top of the other shelf
holds an old oil can, a photo,
and some lovely old bottles.
That's the edge of my
button garland hanging in the corner.

 I love old baby shoes.
Makes me wonder how old the child
who wore them is (or would be) today.

 Another sweet pair of baby shoes,
along with an antique spelling book.

The other wall is mostly taken up by

a window, but beneath the window

sits a gossip bench that I dressed up

with some pages from my 1800's Peterson's Magazines.

It makes a nice spot to drop my purse 

when I walk in the door.

 These sweet found bird's nests
rest on the bench.

 And this book stack with a remnant
from a hymnal rest there also.

Between the window and the chalkboard

is a narrow spot, just wide enough

to hang a wonderfully aged clip board,

and the "tintype" of myself taken in 1800's clothing.

 

Attached to the clip board is this fabulous 

title page from an antique book.

 We still have to install new flooring
over the plain concrete floors,
but I just smile walking into my
entryway now.

The only real expenses in this room
were the small can of chalkboard paint,
a jug of Elmer's glue and $3 for the dictionary
that covered all the walls.
This entire room remodel cost
less than $40!
