Creative Visualization

What do you see when you
you look at this picture?

Look very carefully before answering.
Concentrate.
Focus.
Be open-minded.

Okay, now that you've had time to
dwell on it, I think you'll
agree with me that what you
see is NOT a piano.

It is not a huge,
old,
doesn't-work,
never-will-work
piano.
It's a mantle.
Like this one.
You see that,
Right?
{work with me on this}

If the truth be told,
it isn't even my fault.
It's YOURS.

Well, if you own a mantle,
and you constantly torture me
with images of it...
then this is all your fault.

I was minding my own business,
making a quick run through
the thrift store, when I saw it.

My delusional, mantle-crazed mind
went off the deep end.
So instead of seeing a piano,
I thought I saw a mantle.

And I bought it....
All several hundred pounds of it.

In my defense,
when I took off the front piece
and saw this...
There was no walking away from it.
Nope, couldn't do it.

How could you not fall
in love with a "mantle"
that comes with this kind of bling?

Surely, you mantle-decorating divas
can sympathize with me.
You understand, right?

My husband thinks I'm nuts,
and I really need some backup on this matter.

If you can't visualize this
becoming the most beautiful
"mantle" in my living room,
then PLEASE don't comment.
That's all it will take for him
to never let me live this down.

I'll admit,
It's a bit of a stretch,
but it's too late.
The deed is done.

I'll warn you,
you might want to cover
your ears when my husband
tries to get it out of the thrift store,
and into my home.

Let's just say,
he's not overjoyed with this purchase.
But he conceded that I could buy it.

Actually, I think his exact words were,
"You're going to buy it anyway,
so why did you call to ask me -
just so you could set up delivery?"

I'm so glad he understands me.

In his defense,
I have a history of putting a piano
in a burn pile and sending
it up in flames.
But that's a story for another day.

I can frequently be found visiting these parties.

  4. I have a piano almost exactly like yours! If we are unable to move it out of our house and into our duaghter's house when the time comes, I'm going to create a masterpiece (or pieces) from mine, too. My good friend made a fabulous headboard from a piano she thrifted. I've also seen cocktail bars and hall tables made from pianos. Very cool.

Maybe your husband can make something for himself from the leftover pieces. :@

  7. I agree- brilliant. And btw, I was laughing so hard while I was reading this because it sounds like something I would do- and my husband would react just like yours did. He's learned.

    Thanks for sharing!

  8. You know I see it and if I had a handyman living with me as handy as your hubby is, I would have bought it too. Can't wait till hubby gets his creative on with this project.

  9. I see it also! Cant wait to see the finished results...my husband is the exact same way! Its just not in him to see the potential in furniture pieces...I don't blame them to much, not everyone can have the special gift that we do.....too bad for them :)

  13. The piano I snagged is in my garage awaiting its conversion into a wine cabinet. The poor thing was once in working condition (except for the peeled ivory keys) until it fell over in the uhaul on the way to my house. I will soon have the entire church youth group over to take out the 300lb sound board (Commenter above: it makes GREAT wall art if your wall can hold 300 pounds), and then I will have to figure out how to use the table saw my hubby bought me for Christmas...

  14. I have often looked at pianos on craig's list. I've never seen one in a thrift store. I've heard they are nearly impossible to dismantle. (did you know I LOVE a good challenge) Someday, when I find one, it will come home with me.
Good Luck, have fun, can't wait to see it!

  15. I see it Angie. Too cool. The keys created in a frame for a mirror or clock, or strung together with sheet music banners for holidays.....a print of a musical motif scene over the mantle..ooolala
