Made by Hand

I love all the gifts I received for Christmas,
but I have a special fondness for the handmade ones,
and my mom always delivers in that category.

I know I've bragged on my mom before,
but I just have to do it again.

Every year I request hand-sewn things from her.
Most years, I ask for a new supply of potholders.
I love the ones she makes and
she always picks the best fabrics for them as well.
I use them daily, so each year I'm ready for new ones
that don't have spaghetti sauce stains on them.

At our previous house, I had the perfect kitchen window,
and she indulged me
by sewing a different valance for the window
for every month of the year.
And then I moved...
New house....new sizes of windows...you get the idea.
And she didn't threaten to kill me.

This year, I gave her a vintage tea towel
that I wanted to have turned into
2 pillows and a vintage tablecloth
that I wanted turned into curtains.

She indulged me again, finished them
& sent them back to me,
along with other Christmas gifts
and I just love them!

Look how cute the pillows turned out!

I wanted the covers to have envelope backs
so I could remove the pillow forms and
wash the covers.  She made special pillow forms
out of osnaburg fabric for them, since the aren't
a typical size of pillow form.

Here are the curtains she made from the
vintage tablecloth.
She's pretty darn handy with a sewing machine!
The tablecloth is fairly bright white, against
the antique white of the Bible pages on my walls,
so I may tea-dye the curtains to give them
a more aged appearance.
I had my husband hold them back to see how
it would look and I think I may try to come up
with something to make them into tie-back curtains.

I've already given her my
birthday/anniversary/whatever request...
a new bed coverlet made from ticking, to go along
with the sweet little ticking pillow
I got at the thrift store.

I told you my mom is the best!
Thanks, Mom!

I can frequently be found visiting these parties.

  7. How sweet of your mom to continue to sew those delightful gifts for you, Angie! I have a tea towel almost identical to yours. I stored it away some time ago to use as a pillow cover. Maybe I'll actually get mine made during this new year. ;)
