I knew the rule...
I tried to obey it...
I knew the pain it would cause...
But I broke it anyway.
The first rule of being a Vintage and Antique seller
is not to become attached to your goods.
Distance yourself.
Keep it out of your eyesight.
And for pity's sake,
don't make it a part of your home decor.
In the past, I've been really good about
distancing myself from the goods I sell.
I bring them home, photograph them,
write the listings for them,
then put them on an ugly shelf in my workshop
where they sit until they sell....where I can't look at them.
Lately, though I've broken that rule a lot.
My inner hoarder said,
"Wouldn't that look great in your entryway?"
"Gosh, that would look perfect for Christmas."
Sadly, I was tempted and listened.
I brought home this birdcage.
I photographed it,
I wrote the listing for it,
then I promptly decided it it would
look perfect in my vintage-style entryway.
I mean, look at that sweet little door!
And the shape, oh the shape...it's perfect.
It was late in the evening
(actually, the wee hours of the morning)
when I finished up in my office,
so I left it sitting there,
thinking I would hang it in my entryway today....
just until it sold.
It sold today.
I didn't even get time to enjoy it at all,
and I shouldn't have hoped to.
That's my punishment for breaking the rule.
Crushed hope.
I also brought home this terrifically rusted hanging grocery scale.
I photographed it,
I listed it...
and it's going straight into my workshop
where it will sit on the ugly shelf until it sells.
Lonely and forlorn.
What a humdinger lie that is!
It's going in my entryway -
along with this old pitchfork head.
Maybe, just maybe, they will stay around long enough
for me to enjoy.
Not to keep, mind you.
I just want to visit with them for a little while.
Or....I could just be setting myself up
for more crushed hope.
It's worth the risk.
You want to hear what's worse?
I listed this silver photo tree in my shop...
then I promptly went to an antique store yesterday
and bought antique postcards to put on it!
It's in my house, getting all comfy-cozy.
Foolish heart....you are setting yourself up for more dashed hopes.
Sigh...I'll do better. After the holidays.
Then it's back to following the rules.
Then again, rules are made for breaking.
{don't tell my kids I even *thought* that!}

Oh my that birdcage was awesome! I feel your pain but as you said, rules are sometimes made to be broken. It's okay to sometimes keep some goodies for yourself! ;)
ReplyDeleteJeanine
Oh my, I seem to be breaking all of the rules! Actually, I didn't know about these rules, so that is my excuse. I am sending speedy recovery to your bruised heart :)
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I LOVE your entry way!
Oh My... I am the WORST at this... I keep everything and then I promptly GIVE it away when someone ADMIRES it... Then as they are heading out the door with it...I begin to wonder would it be WRONG to Grab it out of their hands and Run back into the house and lock the door behind me... I CERTAINLY feel your pain... :)
ReplyDeleteit must be so hard!! everything you show..i want!! if i was in your shoes..i wouldn't have a shop because i'd have nothing to put in it!
ReplyDelete~bless your heart~
hahaha....i have done the same thing!!!!
ReplyDeleteI think I am glad I am not a reseller because I would have the hardest time parting with my treasures. However I am in the works to get a booth at an antique store, so I am going to have to learn that lesson quickly.
ReplyDeleteLove the cage!!!
Smiles,
The Joyful Thrifter
Angie, you are so funny. I easily get attached to things myself. Don't know if I could be a dealer. ;-)
ReplyDeleteOh, I would be in a terrible spot!
ReplyDeleteOh no, so sad to let things go. I love that bird cage, it had wonderful patina. Laura
ReplyDeleteBe careful, you are tempting all of us, too! They are going to sell even faster now that you have blogged them!
ReplyDeleteBirds are some of the most interesting and intelligent types of pets to have. Some need to climb constantly, and others need an cat proof bird cage because they always seem to figure out how to get out! There are lots of options when it comes to bird cages.
ReplyDeleteWell good luck with that rule, as you can see
ReplyDeleteit's hard to keep. I know what you are talking about. Kathi
Yep, it's one of the pitfalls of buying and selling goodies! It happens to me ALL the time. And to make matters worse, hubby has begun to lay claim to the things I'm buying to sell! That's a double whammy!!! ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking to Time Travel Thursday, Angie.
Blessings,

So true! It's so hard to let great items go! I just brought one back home tonight! My hubby says, "something comes in, something has to go"! Really? I'm a rule breaker too! I love all of this! It's amazing! You are so talented! I'm a new follower!
ReplyDeleteGood for you! why set them in another room? enjoy them!!
