Tattered Elegance

I have an addiction to old books.
The more tattered it is,
the more I love it.

Because of their battered appearance,
they are often viewed as
a step above trash,
so sometimes I'm able to get
them at auctions, very inexpensively.

One of my favorite things to do
with tattered old books is
to group them together in book stacks.
The books by themselves are beautiful,
but grouping them together really accentuates
how the passage of time has affected each book.

Some books have covers
that are badly destroyed
or are even missing altogether,
but they are still lovely
when grouped together
and tied up in cotton twine,
vintage ribbon or seam binding.

If a book is completely falling apart,
it then becomes part of my
stash that I'll use on another project.

And they also make unique "pedestals"
for displaying other vintage goods.

Enjoy a tattered treasure today!

 Blessings,

  5. I love all kinds of books. These are great ideas for displaying old books! I especially like how you've tied them off with vintage items.

I picked up a big history of the US (coverless) this weekend with crafting in mind. Also found a music booklet filled with Bach, I think. I see a banner ala KOT in my decorating future... Thanks for the inspiration!

  18. Your title caught my eye at Susan's place...the juxtaposition of tattered and elegance is something I really like. Years ago I started collecting old cookbooks that are just in this tattered condition. I will certainly use them for displays! Thanks!

  20. I love old books too - as long as they don't smell musty. You are right - tying them together makes them more than the sum of their parts.

  22. I'm with you. I use old books all the time to decorate with. I search for just the right colors to mix into my decor. My best buy was a couple of years ago our historical society was having their annual book sale and I found an old Webster Dictionary (hugh) for a .25 cent and the best part inside was an old black and white photograph taken in the earlier years at one of our foundries here in the area.

The dictionary sits on our coffe table in the family room and the picture was framed and hangs in the hallway with others like it.

    Love your idea!!

  26. Love your post and blog! I think I'm going to have to drop by our second hand store and see what "old" books I can score to make some banners for the Fall, Holiday, and Christmas season! I also have made a few book page wreaths that are super fun. I also love old books and have a small collection of books that my family brought with them from Scotland four generations ago as well as others each generation has acquired since.

  27. I love old books as well. I have several, some not quite as old as others. You can go to tag sales in the summer and get all kinds.
I have some really old primers that I actually taught my son from when I was homeschooling him. Now I look back and think, what was I thinking lol.
I love how you have them tied up together. they look wonderful.
    Thanks.
    Merry Christmas
