Mom, This One's for You

My mom lives in New Mexico
and our new house is in Illinois,
so she hasn't gotten to see what the house looks like,
other than a few random photos I've put on this blog.
Mothers need to visualize where
their kids and grandkids are living.

So Mom, this is for you,
{and for anyone else who
can stand to look}

Now you can see why I need your help, Mom.
Desperately.

{These photos were taken with a cell phone
before we bought the house,
so forgive the really bad quality.}
 From entryway into kitchen
Counters and cabinets dividing kitchen and living room

This dark stained wood is everywhere
throughout the house.
Everywhere.
I like dark, stained wood...
in moderation and preferably
on furniture.
Walls, cabinets, and doors...no.

Having said that,
The wood floors in the living room &
two of the bedrooms, I do like.
Kitchen - note the spoons turned into drawer pulls
View from living room looking toward kitchen
The shelves are the backside of the kitchen counter/cabinets.
It's the first project I tackled.
I'll be showing you the result soon.
 My bedroom
SO much dark wood
 Another view of bedroom
Note the funky closet - those are stairs beneath,
causing the weird angle from the wall.
Oh look...more dark wood.
This is the hallway leading to my bedroom.
I'm working on this hallway right now...
just taking a little break.
I'll be showing it to you later this week.
Laundry room/bathroom
Spacious, but hideously ugly.
Almost makes you want to "hold it", doesn't it?
This is the first project my husband is tackling right now.

I'm sure you are starting to wonder
if we had any good reasons for buying this home in its current state.
You'll just have to believe me when I say we did.
Really, we did.

You should also know that this is
the 3rd fixer-upper we've purchased.
We're not novices,
but we are a little stupid.

 Apparently we never learned
our lesson with each previous house,
we've just gotten older,
so the work seems harder now than it used to.

Here's to aging and ignorance!

  5. I agree - great bones. Hardwoods, space, and when you paint, the results will be so dramatic! I bought a fixer, too, and I love doing the work, but am getting older, too. My knees do not like a ladder anymore. It just takes longer, but the results are still rewarding! With your taste level, it will look great, and we get to share it along with you! Yea you and yea us!

  6. I can see it now. Knock down that wall between the kitchen and living or put up two columns if you need to hold up the ceiling. Put a bar between the two columns and you have open concept. Paint, paint and more paint will lighten up those dark walls. Can we all say PROJECT HOUSE! but you are used to that Right?

  8. We also bought an old house with a lot of dark wood among other things, mainly cracks everywhere. It's amazing how a light shade of paint can just lift room and give it a whole new feel.
